50 years ago the idea became reality: Germany’s first national park was founded. To mark the anniversary of the Bavarian Forest National Park, a new illustrated book shows the largest forest reserve in Central Europe between Germany and the Czech Republic.
The motto for Germany’s oldest national park is: “Let nature be nature”. The Bavarian Forest National Park, together with the neighboring Šumava Biosphere Reserve in the Czech Republic, forms the largest forest reserve in Europe.
In the meantime, the area has been expanded to more than 24,000 hectares. Flora and fauna were able to recover more and more. Not only wolves, lynxes, otters and capercaillie have returned with the help of humans with attempts to settle, but also many microorganisms, rare mushrooms and herb species.
